Microsoft recently announced that its 16-year-old online e-mail service Hotmail would be streamlined, closely integrated with social media, and renamed Outlook.com.
Remember how Microsoft rebranded their email service as Outlook.com? Outlook Mail is the front-end while Outlook.com is the back-end. As with Outlook.com, many people incorrectly refer to Outlook Mail as Outlook Online. There’s no such thing as Outlook Online.
Outlook.com, which has launched in preview form, brings elements of Microsoft’s Windows Metro design to your email and aims to fight spam and irrelevant greymail right out of your inbox.
Hotmail was one of the first web-based email services, which launched in 1996. The name Hotmail was created after HTML, or HoTMaiL. It’s one of the most popular domains in the world and dominates the Brazilian, Australian, and European markets for email providers.
In 2012, Microsoft finally did away with the Hotmail name and rebranded its free email service as Outlook. With a new name and a changed look, Microsoft aimed to make Outlook more user-friendly and inclusive by integrating One Drive (cloud service), Office Online and Skype into its email.
